Overview of new Discovery and Analysis capabilities

As mentioned previously, you can now use Notes Migrator for SharePoint to discover and analyze your Notes environment well in advance of a migration project. In fact, this is already become the tool of choice for a number of consultants and System Integrators conducting complete pre-migration assessment projects.

I am particularly pleased with the end-user organizations who have downloaded the tool and gotten started on their analysis project without any help from anybody.  This is in sharp contrast to other "tools" on the market which require tons of training, if not expensive services engagements.  But I digress...

With release 5.0, you can Discover Notes databases across all your Domino servers in all locations.  You have a choice of directly scanning all your servers (you give us the server name and a folder path to scan) or performing the initial discovery by reading existing Database Catalogs or Domain Catalogs (if your organization runs the Domino Cataloger process).

Notes Migrator for SharePoint will immediately Classify your databases.  The product ships with a set of predefined rules for recognizing many common types of applications such as document libraries, discussion databases, team rooms, Domino administration databases and many others.  Even better, you can extend this system by adding your own classes for your custom application types.  (As I will discuss in a separate post, this classification process - consolidating similar types of applications - is a fundamental part of any serious analysis project.)

There are also several types of "deep analysis" tasks that you can run.

Usage Analysis helps you identify applications haven't been used in awhile and understand in detail who is using them.

Design Analysis looks into the design elements of your database to help determine application complexity.  In particular, you can do an automatic template comparison to figure out which applications have been customized and exactly what is different from the original application template.

Data Analysis helps you understand the various dimensions of data used in a particular application.  For example, discover which databases are actually using OLE objects, document links, embedded forms, digital signatures, encryption, document level security, etc.

All this information is available in a variety of views and you can even design your own custom views.  Notes Migrator for SharePoint collects over 150 properties about each Notes database including the above analysis details as well as data collected while planing and tracking the progress of your migration work.  This screen shot just shows a small subset of those.

No migration tool would be complete with out a great reporting system.  Notes Migrator for SharePoint embeds Microsoft's report viewer control (similar to what Reporting Services uses) for displaying and printing reports and charts.  Power users can use Visual Studio's report designer to author their own reports.

Finally, we have a variety of data export options: views can be exported a CSV text files, reports can be exported as PDF and Excel files, and you can do a complete export of all database details as XML.
